Derek Wilson Presents Abstracted Alignment @ Golden Thread Gallery
Launching at 6pm on Thursday, 6th July and running until Saturday, 19th August, Derek Wilson's Abstracted Alignment will take over the Project Space in Belfast's Golden Thread Gallery
Abstracted Alignment, Derek Wilson’s first solo exhibition at the Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast, is not be missed
'Abstracted Alignment' is a new exhibition, showing in Belfast's Golden Thread Gallery, from renowned ceramicist Derek Wilson. The object is not always the sole focus, but how it is placed and viewed is a constant preoccupation. For this exhibition Wilson has been influenced by the concept of Tableau Vivant, re-imaginings of still life paintings. These groupings are not recreations of artworks but rather they are varying references to placement, structure, form and space within them. Using the space to experiment with a series of compositions, he will reference recurring themes that have occupied his practice, such as his interest in British Constructivism, Minimalism, and De Stijl.
Born in Belfast, Derek Wilson graduated from Ulster University with an MA in Applied Arts in 2007. He has exhibited extensively, gaining international recognition for his ceramic-based practice. His minimalist objects shift between the utilitarian and the abstract, referencing ideas of restraint and containment. He was awarded the Major Individual Artists Award in 2012, the Degenhardt Award in 2006, and DCCOI 3rd Level Award in 2007. His work is held in numerous private and public collections.
UPDATE: On Saturday, 5th August at 12 noon join Golden Thread Gallery for a children's pottery workshop inspired by the beautiful work of Derek Wilson's, 'Abstracted Alignment.' Each child will be invited to create a pot or two inspired by the ceramic forms in the gallery's front space. They can then take these home to be painted and decorated at their lesiure.
