August Craft Month @ Flowerfield Arts Centre

From the 22nd of July until the 26th of August, a collection of Craft Workshops and Masterclasses led by talented designer-makers will take over Flowerfield Arts Centre, the Creative Hub on the North Coast

Ceramic Mould Making Workshop with Gail Mahon

When: 10.30am 22/07/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

Price: £55 (Advance booking required)

Ceramicist, Gail Mahon is teaching the skill of plaster mould making for slip-casting clay vessels. Good plaster moulds make it possible to 'mass produce' work, saving time and keeping production standards consistent. Use for vessels or pattern sprigging for surface decorations. 

Not suitable for beginners or those under 16.

Throwing Porcelain Bowls & Vessels with Adam Frew 

When: 10am-4pm 01/08/2017 – 04/08/2017 & 07/08/2017 – 11/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

Price: £190 per week (Advance booking required)

Participants get the chance to make their own energetic wheel thrown pots nd vessels using porcelain clay and finish with stains & glazes, under the teaching guidance of the talented ceramicist, Mr Adam Frew. Eagerly awaited, places are limited. Suitable only for advanced students.

Two-Day Sculptural Slip Casting with Gail Mahon

When: 10.30am-5pm 04/08/2017 – 05/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

Price: £85 (Advance booking required)

Following on from the mould making workshop, Gail Mahon offers a one and a half day workshop in Slip Casting techniques. This technique using liquid clay is suited to the mass-production of ceramics, especially for shapes not easily made on a wheel e.g. decorative reliefs, handles or other trims.

Minimum age 16 yrs. Not suitable for beginners.

Two-Day Glass Bead Making Lampwork Workshop

When: 10am-4pm 05/08/2017; 10am-1pm 07/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

Price: £95 (Advance booking required)

Lampworking is the craft of using a hand held torch to reduce coloured glass stringers (rods) to a molten state and rework as decorative beads, Glass maker, Catherine Keenan teaches participants the basics of this molten craft, to produce unique beads for use in jewellery making. 

Minimum age 16 yrs. Not suitable for beginners.

'HOT POTS' Ceramics Exhibition

When: 12pm-4pm 05/08/2017 (Launch) until 1pm 26/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

A showcase exhibition featuring work by noted ceramicists working in Northern Ireland today to both complement Craft NI August Craft Month 2017 and mark Flowerfield Arts Centre’s thirty six year history of pottery making on the North Coast. A celebration of a great craft making heritage. 

The Gallery is open to the public Monday - Friday 10.00am-4.30pm and Saturdays 10.00am-1.00pm.

One-Day Fused Chimes Warm Glass Workshop with Natasha Duddy

When: 10am-3pm 11/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

Design & create your own unique Wind-chimes or elegant Sun-catcher from fused coloured glass. Glassmaker, Natasha Duddy, will guide you through the cut, fuse and slump process of warm glass making. 

Suitable for ages 14+ and beginners. Glass making workshops require that participants must wear closed shoes, not sandels or 'crocs'.

Two-Day Agate Ware Ceramic Workshop with Lorna Noble

When: 10am-4pm 14/08/2017 – 15/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Belfast

Price: £75 (Advance booking required)

Agateware pottery is a combination of contrasting coloured clays. The name comes from the agate stone, which when sliced shows multi-coloured layers. It allows for both precise planned patterns, and free random effects. This pottery is a signature style of potter Lorna Noble, who will teach the technique over the two day workshop.

One-Day Pate de Verre Glass Making Workshop with Alison Lowry

Alison Lowry, award winning Glass Maker, is offering this fun hands-on class on the ancient technique of 'Pate de Verre'. Learn how to create a simple vessel and a flat personalized piece of pate de verre. Equipment and glass will be supplied, but dress for mess!

Pre Raku Firing Day, Vessel Making Workshop with Lorna Noble

When: 10am & 2pm 16/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

Price: £55 per 3hr session (Advance booking required)

In preparation for a Raku Firing Day (Raku for Raconteurs) vessels and objects need to be made in advance. These two small workshops allow for this, but even if you don’t want to take part in the Raku Firing it’s still a good workshop with Lorna Noble. Materials will include ‘Ashraf Hanna’ clay. Two separate groups in one day.

Drawing and Construction with Clay: A Day with Alex Scott

When: 10am-4pm 18/08/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre

An illustrated talk by Alex Scott – former Lecturer at NCAD and current member of the Institute of Designers in Ireland – about his work, ideas, approaches, influences, techniques and exhibitions, with a look at pieces of his work. In the afternoon he will give studio based demonstrations in Drawing with Clay & Construction followed by practical activity for participants. Coffee will be supplied.

Alex has exhibited throughout Ireland, UK, Europe, China and Japan. His work is held in The Ulster Museum, Belfast.

Two-Day Rings and Things Silver Making Workshop

This two day, Silver Jewellery Making Workshop with Silversmith, Diane Lyness teaches participants traditional jewellery making techniques to turn their designs into a silver necklace, stacking rings and/or a bangle . You will be surprised with what you can achieve in this workshop.

One-Day Fused Glass Plates & Bowls Fusing & Slumping Workshop

When: 10am-3pm 18/07/2017

Where: Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

In this workshop Natasha Duddy teaches glass cutting and assemblage techniques and how to design and make a flat piece of glass using geometric patterns. Kiln fusing and slumping (two day process) follows after the class and work is picked up when ready, we will contact you.

Raku Firing Days with Malcolm Murchison

East meets West in these firing only workshops led by Malcolm Murchison, earth, air, fire, and water meet. Students should have made pots beforehand, ready for glazing and finishing in the very fiery kiln. Suitable for people with some ceramic experience.

One-Day Fused Glass Decal Imaging Workshop with Natasha Duddy

When: 10am-3pm 25/08/2017

Natasha Duddy teaches you how to create a piece of unique glass, using personal or inspirational images or text set and fired permanently into glass. Send your images in advance to Flowerfield, to be printed as decals ready to use on the day. Ask receptionist for details.

'Throwin' Another Wobbly' Demonstration & Open Studio

As part of the ‘Get Creative’ Weekend in April, Flowerfield threw open the Pottery Studio to the public for a Hey Clay 'have a go at throwing clay on a potter’s wheel', Day. Now they're doing it again! Book yourself a half hour slot and see how you like it. 

The event is open to adults and children (over the age of 12yrs), and visitors are welcome to drop by just to have a look.
